2017 AASHTO LRFD Specifications: Review of Substantial Updates  - 1.0 PDH

This month’s presentation focuses on recently adopted changes to the AASHTO LRFD Design and Construction Specifications. The presentation highlights many substantial updates to the design of steel and concrete bridges including the complete rewrite of LRFD Chapter 5 – Concrete that will appear in the 2017 AASHTO LRFD 8th edition. The background to many of these changes will be explained. The presentation will discuss the updates and provide an opportunity at the end for Q&A regarding these and  other recent changes to the Specifications.


Dr. Frank Russo, PE – Dr. Russo is an Associate Vice president with Michael Baker International and based in their Philadelphia office. He is part of Michael Baker’s national bridge and highway practice. He is a member of the technical advisory committees to AASHTO responsible for writing and updating the LRFD Specifications for Steel and Concrete structures. He has been involved in code development since the 1990’s. He teaches and speaks nationally on various bridge design topics including LRFD superstructure and substructure design, LRFR bridge load rating, the design of curved and skewed steel bridges, fatigue and fracture, and complex concrete bridge design.
