I-495 Bridge in Wilmington, Delaware

Thanks to John Milius, PE and Bruce Shelly, PE of AECOM for their presentation!

The presentation focused on the geology of the area and soil response to overburden pressure, with interesting findings regarding a very slow dissipation after overburden pressure was removed.

Structurally, John discussed how once the movement was initialized, the bridge deck acted as a diaphragm to resist the movement, causing bending stress in the piers at the pile caps.

Bruce and John both discussed the emergency response, the design process for the new foundations, and load transfer from the existing structure to the new structural elements.

Thanks again to John Milius and Bruce Shelly for the thorough and informative presentation!
