Structuring New Access to the Statue of Liberty - 1.0 PDH

Description:
This one hour presentation will concentrate on the 2012 renovation of the Statue of Liberty to improve egress and life safety systems, bringing the monument into compliance with current billing codes.   The installation of two new egress stairs and a new elevator in the 125 year old pedestal created unique structural engineering challenges.  The use of BIM was integral to the collaborative design process of the multi-disciplined team.  This presentation highlights both the original structural engineering strategy to thread an inordinate amount of new structure through a constricted space as well as the course adjustments made as unanticipated existing conditions created obstacles during the construction process.

Presenter:
Denise L. Richards, PE is an associate in the Philadelphia office of Keast & Hood Co. structural Engineers.  Beyond her work as project manager on the Statue of Liberty, Denise's experience covers a vast array of structural systems on a diverse set of buildings including office, educational, laboratory and cultural buildings in the US, Europe, and the Middle East.  Prior to rejoining Keast & Hood Co. in 2009, she served as one of the structural project managers on the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas.
