Cost:
members $45; non-members $50; students $15
Description:
This one hour presentation will concentrate on the aspects of ground improvement as it
relates to concerns germane to Structural Engineering. In the first third of the presentation
attendees will be provided with an interactive presentation that will provide details on the
engineering aspects and theory behind ground improvement utilizing compacted stone
piers. This segment will cover the theory of ground improvement as well as the direct
results the compacted stone pier solution provides for projects. The middle third of the
presentation will present new technologies in ground improvement for projects. This
includes applications of the Geopier solution with differing materials (e.g. grout, concrete,
etc.) and methodologies. This will also include a brief review of Rapid Impact Compaction
(RIC) with details about methodology and applications. The final third of the presentation
will present some contemporary case studies of these systems and how they benefited
those projects.

Presenter:
Keithe J. Merl, CPESC, PE has 15+ years of experience in the analysis, engineering, and
design of geotechnical solutions for a myriad of physical soil and water problems. Mr.
Merl provides comprehensive and innovative services based on science and engineering,
avoiding unnecessary over design and reducing costs for clients. In his capacity as
Northeast Regional Sales Engineer with GeoStructures, Inc. Mr. Merl provides
Engineering, construction, and owner clients with cost-effective solutions for problematic
soil conditions throughout the northeast. Mr. Merl currently holds certifications from the
American Concrete Institute, National Council of Examiners for Engineering and
Surveying, New Jersey Society of Asphalt Technologists (NJSAT), and CPESC (Certified
Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control), and maintain professional engineering
licenses in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, and Delaware.
His professional expertise includes dams, bulkheads, revetments, geology reports,
geotechnical engineering reports, ground improvement techniques, stormwater infiltration testing and design, soil testing, hydrologic/hydraulic analysis, groundwater investigations, groundwater pump tests, slope stability analysis (Limit Equilibrium and LRFD), structure stability determination, streambank stabilization, stormwater retrofits, dredging, soil improvements, foundation engineering, retaining walls, pavement (asphalt, concrete, gravel), soil borings, infield soil testing, Phase I Investigations, Phase II Environmental, and wastewater.
