Topic: Mechanical Stabilized Earth Wall Performance (Earn 1.5 PDH)

Location:   Radisson Valley Forge Hotel and Conference Center
1160 First Avenue, King of Prussia, PA 19406

Cost: members $45; non-members $50; spouse/friends $45; students $15

The occurrence of field failures of MSE walls is far too common.  The Geosynthetics Institute has investigated many such failures which are subdivide into serviceability and collapses.  The lecture will discuss the causes of poor performance, such as:
·         Silt and/or clay backfills
·         Poor or no CQA inspection
·         Global stability issues
·         Internal and external stability issues

This lecture will also describe a major effort of quantifying the seepage pressure under a variety of practical situation of MSE walls.  To accomplish this, a finite difference computer code was developed to simulate mitigation or elimination of seepage pressure in poor draining soils.  The drainage systems used for relieving hydrostatic pressure are invariably geosynthetic and can be used very effectively in the following applications:
·         Base Drain Alone
·         Back Drain Alone (Pipe Outlets)
·         Base and Back Drain
·         Internal GT or GC Drains

The goal of this presentation is for increased awareness of these issues, which will help stem the tide of the unacceptable performance at too many MSE walls.

George Koerner, Ph.D., P.E. is Director of the Geosynthetic Institute.  He is in charge of laboratory accreditation, certification, information and education at GSI. He also manages research projects and has published over 100 technical papers in his 25 year association with geosynthetics.  George’s doctorate is from Drexel University in Geotechnical Engineering.  He is a registered professional engineer in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and an ASQ Certified Quality Auditor.
